Stage designer Es Devlin showcases her mirror maze installation in the Copeland Park building in Peckham, commissioned by i-D and Chanel for their project “The Fifth Sense” which celebrates creative women.
The project, which is heavily fashion based is inspired by the powers of scent in an artistic setting. “The Fifth Sense” will present 6 multi-discipliary work including the Mirror Maze across 2016-2017, which will all be inspired by fragrance and created by women.
Devlin’s installation begins with a short film which shows how the mirrors are structured using lines and dots; very “trippy” but still very engaging, which I think makes the viewer more intrigued to view the rest of the installation. The Mirror Maze was inspired by the CoCo Chanel staircase and comes complete with grey plush carpets to create a more kaleidoscopic feel.

Devlin has compared the whole installation to being back stage at a rock show and becoming lost and disorientated. After being greeted by numerous corridors and dead ends, we then entered a chilling red room filled with smoke, which I feel represented the “stage” as it was the final part of the installation.
